Faculty of Humanities: joint courses and an exchange program with Southern Utah University 17. Apr. 2025

It was Orsolya Jánosy, Head of the International Office of UD, and Balázs Venkovits, Director of the Institute of English and American Studies of the Faculty of Arts, who discussed the details of the cooperation between Southern Utah University (SUU) and the University of Debrecen (UD), including the possibilities of a student exchange program, with Kurt Harris, Director of Learning Abroad at SUU.

“The International Office of the University of Debrecen is the recipient of a significant amount of requests from students for trips to English-speaking countries. So far, our students could go to the United Kingdom and the United States of America mostly for internships. However, we are constantly trying to develop our cooperation for study abroad possibilities, which is not an easy task in the case of our partner universities in the US, due to the high tuition fees there. It is therefore a major step forward that, under the agreement we have just signed, student exchanges can start from the upcoming academic year through support from the Pannonia Scholarship Programme,” said Orsolya Jánosy to hirek.unideb.hu.

The head of the International Office underlined that, first, it will be just students from the Faculty of Humanities that can go to Utah, but the staff of the International Office are confident that, in the future, it will be possible to involve several other faculties in the cooperation.

“Recently, the Faculty of Humanities has been able to add content to several collaborations where our students work together with foreign students abroad on online projects, gaining experience that they can use later when working for a multinational company. Another important benefit of these partnerships is that quite a few students from the Faculty of Humanities are able to travel to and develop their skills in the United States as a result of these partnerships,” said Péter Csatár, Deputy Dean for Strategy and Economics at the Faculty of Humanities.

Balázs Venkovits, Director of the Institute of English and American Studies, believes that the agreement signed last year between Southern Utah University (SUU) and the University of Debrecen (UD) provides a firm basis for strengthening the educational and academic links between these two institutions.

“Our cooperation has already resulted in a number of collaborations between the two institutions. We have submitted a joint proposal to create a hybrid history course, in which American and Hungarian students work together, and we have also launched a pilot program in English as a Foreign Language under the coordination of Fruzsina Szabó (IEAS). We hope that, in addition to online collaboration, we will soon be able to implement further visits in person as well mutual student exchanges,” said Balázs Venkovits, Director of the English-American Institute.

“Southern Utah University (SUU) is pleased to partner with the University of Debrecen to provide educational and research exchanges for students and faculty from both universities. A cardinal part of SUU's mission is to develop close and personal relationships that foster and facilitate cross-cultural understanding, and we look forward to working with the University of Debrecen to help American students learn more about Hungary's rich history and culture,” said Kurt Harris, Associate Professor and Director of Learning Abroad at SUU.

During his visit, Kurt Harris also conducted a workshop on intercultural communication and the oeuvres of American authors Ernest Hemingway and e.e. cummings to students of the Institute of English and American Studies.
