Visa and Residence Permit

When planning your trip to Hungary one important thing to start with is checking if you need a visa to enter the country and study here, or not.

Applying For a Visa
 

Visa supporting documents can only be issued by the University after the yearly tuition fee* has been paid in its entirety and credited on the UD’s account. It is recommended to submit the Visa application as soon as having received the Letter of Acceptance due to the duration of the process.

*For students holding the Bangladeshi, Syrian, Burmese, Yemeni citizenship extra deposit payment is required. For further details please click here

The following documents are sent to the students by the University concerning the Visa application by express delivery:

  • Original Letter of Acceptance,
  • original signed and sealed Visa supporting letter in Hungarian issued by the University of Debrecen, addressed to the Embassy
  • and the draft version of the Health Insurance Contract.

 

Students who are required to apply for a Visa entitling them to a residence permit, can only obtain this type of Visa (D-type) in their country of origin or at the Hungarian Embassy closest to their place of residence; it cannot be arranged in Hungary.

Students, or Representatives of the University are kindly asked to book an appointment for the Visa interview and ensure that the applicant submits all required documents in a timely manner.

For Current Students: After Arriving in Hungary


As of 1 July 2023, most immigration tasks should be managed online (extension of residence permit, change of accommodation etc.).

Special regulations for Bangladeshi, Syrian, Burmese and Yemeni citizens

From March 2025, the tuition fees payable to the University of Debrecen before the issuance of the visa supporting documents will be as follows:

  1. In case of undergraduate programs where the tuition fee is under 10000 USD students must pay 1,5 year tuition fee before receiving the visa supporting documents. 
  2. In case of preparatory courses (excluding the Basic Medicine Course) students are to pay the tuition fee for the preparatory courses + the first semester's fee of their chosen undergraduate program for the subsequent year
  3. After successfully* completing the first semester of their studies at the University of Debrecen, students may
    • request a refund of the amount paid beyond the annual tuition fee (may be utilized to cover living expenses), OR
    • have it credited toward the following year’s tuition.
  4. *The conditions for successfully completing the semester are:
    • The student had an active status during the semester.
    • The student obtained a signature in at least one subject.

The above tuition fee policy will be effective from March 1, 2025, and applies to students from the following countries (nationalities):
Bangladesh, Myanmar, Syria, Yemen.
