Journal of English and American Studies of the University of Debrecen Improving Global Recognition 24. Apr. 2026

The Hungarian Journal of English and American Studies (HJEAS) features outstanding research in the fields of English and American studies. It is published by the Institute of English and American Studies; its predecessor was Hungarian Studies in English launched by Professor László Országh in 1963. The journal received its current name and became a biannual publication in 1995, under the editorial leadership of Zoltán Abádi-Nagy. It was later taken over by Donald E. Morse, honorary doctor of the University of Debrecen, who, with the help of the editors and the international editorial board, has further increased the reach and impact of the journal in recent years.

Róbert Keményfi, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, is convinced that the current recognition of HJEAS is the result of years of work and aligns with the faculty’s internationalization strategy, in addition to a recent advancement in the QS World University Rankings.

- We congratulate the editorial team and will continue to support initiatives that enhance the international recognition of our journals. Acta Classica Universitatis Scientiarum Debreceniensis, another journal of the faculty, is now also included in the Scopus database, which will be followed by other faculty journals, hopefully. At the same time, in line with the traditions of the Faculty of Humanities, we encourage the publication of monographs too- the dean said.

Regarding the latest SCImago Journal & Country Rank rating, HJEAS received a Q2 rating in the Literature and Literary Theory, and Visual and Performing Arts categories, and a Q3 rating in the History and Philosophy fields.

Editor-in-chief Donald E. Morse emphasized that the significant advancement of the Hungarian Journal of English and American Studies in the rankings is the result of years of persistent teamwork by the institute, managing editor Dorottya Mózes, and the entire editorial staff of the journal.

- Their unity and dedication were instrumental to our success. The support of the university and the Faculty of Humanities was no less important, providing an opportunity for the editors to publish top-tier articles from Hungarian and foreign scholars. I am very proud of my colleagues and grateful to them for this significant achievement- the editor-in-chief said.

The journal has maintained its biannual publishing frequency and has been published Open Access since 2023. In addition, the publication of various special issues and thematic blocks has significantly fostered international research partnerships and increased the citation impact of the journal’s content.

Balázs Venkovits, Director of the Institute of English and American Studies, highlighted that the university’s experts also provided important assistance in increasing the journal’s international reach and achieving inclusion in the Scopus database, through the institutional support programme. Moreover, the staff of the institute and the editors played a key role in maintaining this standard over the years.

- We set the goal of moving up the rankings four years ago, when the indexing began, and now, with this result, we have achieved this, through international cooperation. We are now working to ensure that HJEAS remains a leading journal in the wider region in the future, and we would like our English-language HJEAS Books series to receive similar recognition- the director added.

Previous issues of the Hungarian Journal of English and American Studies are available on the JSTOR and ProQuest digital research platforms and can also be found in databases such as DOAJ, CEEOL, EBSCO and MLA International Bibliography, besides Scopus.
