International conference on patient safety in anaesthesiology 08. Apr. 2025

- Muscle relaxation in surgery is a key area of anaesthesiology. During the operation, we give the patient a muscle relaxant to ensure immobility during the procedure. By the end of the operation, however, the effects of the medication must wear off so that the patient can breathe properly again. The effect of the muscle relaxant is monitored continuously and, if there is still a significant muscle relaxant effect; this will be suspended with medication to prevent muscle weakness and consequent respiratory failure. Our most important experience with the use, effects and dosage of drugs was discussed at the international meeting," said Professor Béla Fülesdi, Director of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre.

The international conference was hosted by the Tassonyi Edömér Neuromuscular Working Group of the Department of Anaesthesiology of the University of Debrecen Clinical Centre in early April. The event was attended by thirty experts who have been instrumental in the study of the topic and the formulation of clinical guidelines, coming from several European countries as well as from the United States and Japan. The University of Debrecen was represented by Professor Béla Fülesdi, head of the Edömér Tassonyi Neuromuscular Research Group, and his colleagues László Asztalos, Adrienn Pongrácz, Réka Nemes, György Nagy and Péter Filipcsuk.

- Several studies and guidelines on surgical muscle relaxation have been published recently. The primary aim of the meeting was to develop recommendations on how to translate the recent US and European patient care guidelines into everyday clinical practice and the strategic steps to be taken to achieve this," said Professor Béla Fülesdi.

The participants also decided to establish an international society, the Society of Neuromuscular Management, and an international research network. A summary of the proceedings will soon be published in a leading international peer-reviewed journal. The programme also commemorated the work of key Hungarian scientists in the field (Francis (Ferenc) Földes, Szilveszter E. Vizi, Sándor Ágoston, János Szenohradszky and Edömér Tassonyi).

The Budapest conference was graced by the presence of Szilveszter E. Vizi, former President of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, who has played a significant role in the theoretical background of the subject.
