Strengthening US agricultural relations 13. Sep. 2024

Before his arrival at the University of Debrecen, the President of the Pennsylvania Farmers Union gave a presentation on regenerative practices and how to maintain profitable family farms at the ÖKO EXPO event in Hajdúnánás-Kendereskert. He shared the experience of a producer-driven organization working to protect the social and economic well-being of family farmers across Pennsylvania. The association, which includes grain, vegetable, and fruit-growers, livestock and dairy farmers, has a clear goal of maintaining a sustainable economy.

Michael Kovach visited the University of Debrecen after the lecture. In a meeting with Endre Harsányi, Vice-Rector for Sector Development, responsible for the development of agricultural and food sciences, and Okszána Kiszil, Director of Coordination and Strategy, they discussed in detail the history of the University of Debrecen, its training and research system, its infrastructure, its international relations, and its colorful student, sports and cultural life.
In connection with the foreign students, it was mentioned that currently 22 American students are enrolled at the University of Debrecen, with the largest number of students studying at the Faculties of General Medicine, Economics, Science and Technology and Dentistry. Michael Kovach called for more students to come from the USA, and offered to help establish contacts with American universities, with the involvement of the Hungarian diplomat at the Hungarian Embassy in Washington, Béla Kocsy.
Endre Harsányi, Vice Rector of the University of Debrecen, highlighted the dual degree program in precision agricultural engineering launched last year in cooperation between the University of Debrecen and South Dakota State University, which recently saw four students from Debrecen go on a six-month study abroad. In addition to attending lectures, the young students will have the opportunity to participate in farm internships, and students from South Dakota State University will also be coming to Debrecen in the coming semesters.

The American agricultural expert's visit to Debrecen ended with a visit to the Learning Center and the university's sports facilities in the stadium, following a meeting in the Main Building.
