Internationally recognized achievements at DE GYGYK 28. Apr. 2025

The ‘Special Treatment’ International Interdisciplinary Conference, which celebrates its jubilee this year, began with a spectacular sign-language performance by children from UD's Kindergarten and students of special educational needs. For more than a decade now, this conference has provided a platform for researchers and professionals from Hungary and abroad to publish their academic research findings on the position, care and development of children and adults with special needs, and on the solution of the latter’s problems.

“The Faculty of Education for Children and Special Educational Needs has a particularly important role in the life of the University of Debrecen. Through the introduction of the special education program, the faculty has been developed on a scale that has required several infrastructural expansions and a lot of energy and resources over the past ten years. There are more and more children nowadays who need special treatment, which is why I am very pleased to see that there are so many participants at this conference. It seems evident that it is extremely important to have a scientific-scholarly approach to this topic, which will enable us to move forward in this field both in Hungary and internationally, so that these children could also become part parcel of society,” said Chancellor Zoltán Bács at the opening of the event.

The Faculty of Education for Children and Special Educational Needs launched its special education program in 2017 in response to the needs of the labor market, the popularity of which has exceeded all expectations since. From year to year, hundreds of prospective professionals receive training of outstanding quality and marketable degrees and diplomas here.

“The training portfolio of our faculty offers not only a program for would-be special education teachers of children with special educational needs, but also a specialization in developmental education for young people with difficulties in integration, learning and behavior. Both of these are extremely popular with prospective and practicing teachers. In addition to providing a high level of theoretical and practical training for them, this conference also assists in the proper preparation of our own students. Furthermore, I am proud that it is now a prestige for researchers to have their papers appear in the Interdisciplinary Journal of Special Behaviour published by the Faculty,” said Dean Erzsébet Gortka-Rákó.

This year, it was the first time that the jubilee conference was extended to cover three days. In addition to the plenary session, experts and representatives of Hungarian and foreign training institutions and professional services could learn about the latest research findings from the perspective of several disciplines in more than 25 Hungarian and 4 English-language sessions.

“Our conference this time will focus on topics such as the development of preventive, curative and care systems for healthy living from early childhood to old age, as also highlighted by the initiative called Neumann János Program. In addition to these topics, we will also discuss the application of new technologies based on environmentally conscious and sustainable development, as well as the introduction of solutions and teaching methods that enable the development of artificial intelligence, digital tools and high-level digital skills in the education and training of those concerned,” said Katalin Mező, Associate Professor at the Institute of Special Education at the Faculty of Education for Children and Special Educational Needs of the University of Debrecen.

DE GYGYK has set up a special research group to study this field, the results and publications of which are getting more and more recognition at the international level. This is also supported by the fact that a Special Treatment international research group was formed at the conference, which was established by researchers from 13 countries, in addition to the experts that are members of the faculty of Hajdúböszörmény, to prepare joint studies and databases, the proceedings of which can help in the development of educators worldwide.
