A joint mini-symposium on the latest advances and cutting-edge innovative solutions in technology transfer and science was held at the University of Debrecen with researchers and academic partners from Tsinghua University, a global leader in university rankings. At the forum, the Chinese guests were given a detailed insight into several Debrecen research projects, including R&D processes for pharmaceuticals, dietary supplements and functional foods, as well as the application of artificial intelligence in innovative drug discovery and food processes.
The Interdisciplinary Research Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM-X) at Tsinghua University in Beijing has made significant progress in the research and development of artificial intelligence-based medicines for traditional Chinese and modern medicine. At the symposium, Dr. Zhang Bo, a research physician representing the institute, presented the UNIQ system developed by Li Shao, an academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, which can be effectively applied to interdisciplinary research in traditional Chinese medicine and translational research in the fields of drugs, food and products.
On the occasion of the launch of the collaboration between the two institutions, Rector Zoltán Szilvássy recalled the milestones of the past period.
- We have recently become a full member of the University Network for Research Collaboration, the One Belt, One Road initiative's network of partner universities, helped by our close collaboration with three Chinese giants - Eve Power, CATL and Semcorp. Another factor shaping the future is our parallel relationship with BMW, which has created an ideal situation where the University of Debrecen is treated as a partner both by the Chinese international network and the German partners, unprecedented in the almost 500-year history of the institution. In addition, the cultural link is not negligible, either, since medicine and traditional Chinese medicine provide a uniquely valuable cultural platform for our cooperation," said Zoltán Szilvássy, Rector of Debrecen University.
The university leader added: the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of General Medicine, the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Clinical Centre form a significant health industry-scientific force field, which, together with the researchers and results of Tsinghua University, which shape the world's scientific life, and the partner university network of the One Belt, One Road initiative, provide a future-oriented and solid financial basis for international collaborations.
The cooperation agreement was signed by Yang Pengchong, Head of the Branding Committee of the Urban Management Research Center of Tsinghua University School of Public Administration, Managing Director of Tsinghua Holdings Cultural and Creative (Beijing) Brand Management, who signed the agreement on behalf of Tsinghua University, and expressed his appreciation for the University of Debrecen's history, health industry aspirations and strategies. He emphasised that Tsinghua University also places great emphasis on interdisciplinarity, with its various departments committed to improving the quality of human life.
- Our aim is to introduce traditional Chinese medicine, food and medicine to Hungarian professionals and to create innovation through cooperation. We are very pleased to have found in Debrecen a university with a deep historical heritage and a strong expertise in medicine and healthcare," said Yang Pengchong.
After the mini-symposium, the Beijing delegation visited the Confucius Institute of the University of Debrecen, the Science, Technology and Innovation Park in Vezér Street, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Agriculture, Food Science and Environmental Management, and the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, where they discussed cooperation opportunities with experts in rural development.
