Debrecen professor on the board of the international association 27. Oct. 2023

The European Federation of Societies of Biophysics (EBSA) was founded in 1984 primarily to promote and disseminate knowledge of the principles, recent developments and applications of biophysics and to facilitate the exchange of scientific information. It is made up of the biophysical societies of Europe and is governed by an Executive Committee. László Mátyus, Dean of the Faculty of General Medicine, was Secretary from 2000 to 2007, Vice President for two years from 2009, President from 2011 to 2013, and Past President from 2013. His mandate was extended for another two years at the last European Congress of Biophysics.
- It is an honour and a recognition of my professional work that I have been reckoned with for more than two decades on the Board of the European Federation of Biophysical Societies. As a member of the board, I will be able to contribute even more to biophysical research in Hungary and Debrecen, to the education of biophysics and to the training of young researchers. In my position, I have been asked to organise and chair the 2011 EBSA Congress in Budapest. Circumstances at the time did not allow us to organise the congress in Debrecen with more than a thousand participants, but based on the development of hotels and transport services in recent years, I was asked by the current president to prepare a plan for a possible congress in Debrecen," Professor László Mátyus told hirek.unideb.hu.

EBSA supports meetings and schools promoting biophysics in Europe. It also offers scholarships to young scientists to attend the biannual Biophysical Congress, various scientific meetings and working visits.

- Our main aim is to support young researchers. We wish to help them to improve and deepen their knowledge, to have more opportunities for international cooperation, to visit the most important biophysical laboratories in Europe and to benefit from their experience there," said the Dean of the Faculty of General Medicine.

László Mátyus is not only active in the international association, but also in the Hungarian Biophysical Society, where he works to support the development of the next generation of scientists, to promote the collaboration of professional workshops and to improve biophysical research and education.
