During the first year of the University of Debrecen’s English and American Studies, BA, all students complete foundational courses in philosophy, literature, history, and linguistics, while focusing on language proficiency, which is officially assessed via the English Yardstick Exam (EYE) in the second semester.
At the end of the first year, students select a four-semester specialization (such as Business English, English-Hungarian Translation, or a Minor in another program) which concludes with a module closing exam. As studies progress, students further refine their focus in the fourth semester by choosing a two-semester academic track in American Studies, British Studies, or Linguistics and Communication. The degree concludes in the research and defense of a final thesis followed by a comprehensive BA final exam, also referred to as the state exam.
