Moving Forward on the International List

The University of Debrecen has moved up several spots in the most recent world-list published in 2016 by Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).

The CWUR list, which ranks the best one thousand universities in the world, using criteria like quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty, the number of publications, citations, and patents, among others, puts the University of Debrecen ahead of its previous position last year. We are ranked 661st overall, which proves to be the best spot scored by Hungarian universities outside of the capital city, ensuring the continuity of a leading role among institutions of higher education in Hungary.
Moving Forward on the International List
There are 8 objective and robust indicators used for the ranking and 25 % each is given to three of these indicators, including quality of education and alumni employment, with special emphasis on the number of a university's alumni who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals, as well as on the number of a university's alumni who have held CEO positions at the world's top internationally acknowledged companies. Another 25 % comes from quality of faculty, which is measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals during the time period under scrutiny.

The number of patents and citations, their influence, broad impact, and publications, measured by the number of research papers appearing in reputable journals, add 5 % each to the figure calculated on the basis of the methodology employed in the ranking.

From the aspect of the number of publications appearing in reputable journals that are internationally acclaimed in the given academic field, the University of Debrecen is ranked ahead of both Eötvös Lóránd University and Semmelweis University.

“The necessity of rankings should not be questioned in the least, as this sort of measurement and matching the criteria would definitely be a certain factor in judging the reputation of any institution. Naturally, the University of Debrecen also needs “promotional material and commercial advertising,” as potential international students make a decision most often based on this concerning why it is exactly in Debrecen that they would like to go to. Nevertheless, irrespective of whichever ranking they happen to look at, a primary key consideration has got to be the issue of authenticity and academic and professional reliability,” said Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs László Csernoch to unideb.hu.
